Rapid Executive was founded in July 2011 and a few weeks later we had our very own, “minimalist design” home-made website. It was made on Google Sites…and it was terrible, take a look:

Enter WordPress, What is WordPress? Without going into the boring stuff, think of WordPress like a website with 2 sides; a front end – what you see when you go to yourdomain.com in a browser and a back end – the editing or admin section.
At first I was one of those anti-wordpress guys, thinking it was too overused and too full of holes. That was 2009.
Now I run 80% of my sites on WordPress. 3 installs, 2 of which are multisite, and 1 with 25 sites and counting!

Your First Theme
Let’s take a look at a familiar sample – the 2014 WordPress Theme.
Looks great in the demo, magazine style; the dark backgrounds making images stand out. Now you have installed and activated the theme and take a look at your site – hmmm…not much to look at:
For all of WordPress’s simplicity, theme homepages are something that isn’t exactly intuitive. So, what’s the secret to this then? The problem actually arises when you look at designing for a Website as opposed to a Blog. WordPress is a blogging platform at it’s heart so at the outset the install defaults to look like a blog.
There are 2 places to look straight away to sort this out; both of them in the Appearance tab.
Step 1: “Customize”
This option is the first stop for setting up your homepage. In most standard themes this will have a few basic commands to control the look and feel of the site. Setting the Static Front Page option to “A static page” will instantly turn your site from a Blog to a Website.
Just changing this option won’t do much to the look and feel just yet, you need to combine it with the next step
Step 2: “Widgets”
Once you configure your homepage to actually appear like a website, to get it to look more like the demo and less like a blog, your next stop will be the widgets.
Widgets are a powerful component of WordPress and one that I completely overlooked for my first 10 sites. Embarrassing yes, but you don’t need to waste time like I did. Take a look at this intro and we will get into some neat tricks with Widgets in the Intermediate section.
The 2014 theme has only 3 widget areas.
- Primary Sidebar – Usually used as a menu and navigation help for your site. You can have call to actions here, highlighted content etc.
- Content Sidebar – More common with portfolio style sites, this can be used to highlight content.
- Footer Widget Area – The bottom part of the site. On most websites you will see things like the copyright notice, terms, privacy statement etc.
By default, widgets appear on every default page layout. We will get into layouts in the Intermediate section.
The footer is basically the bottom of your site. A Footer widget will usually be put on every page and is there to provide a consistent look to the site. Have a go at typing in some content into each of these widgets and hitting save. The changes appear on your site instantly.
At this point in my journey I was feeling a little discouraged as the hype of a great looking site in minutes quickly turned into a stark reality that I had no idea how half of this stuff worked – I need help. Joining the meetup “WordPress Perth” and chatting to people in varying stages of their own WordPress journey was great and after my first session was sent a link to a fantastic introduction lesson from Marc Beneteau on Udemy (you can find it here) While it’s a little out-dated in some areas and the theme he is using (WeaverII) is also a little lackluster, the essentials really are just that. I recommend giving it a go, it’s a free course and is packed with some great introductions to WordPress.
